  • What are my child’s goals for the year?
  • How will you measure progress towards goals?
  • What rules and systems are most important in the classroom?
  • How will we help my child if he/she falls behind or moves ahead of the class?
  • What can I do to help from home?

while looking for a school:

  • What is the school mission?
  • What is the approach to student discipline and safety?
  • How does the school monitor student progress?
  • How do the arts fit into the curriculum?
  • What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?
  • How do students get to school? Is free school busing available?
  • How does this school support students with special needs?
  • What strategies are used to teach students who have limited English?

things to watch…

  • Is student work displayed, and does it seem appropriate for the grade level?
  • Does the principal interact with students, teachers and parents?
  • How do students behave inside and outside the classroom?
  • How well are the facilities and grounds maintained?

  • Houston ISD Magnet Application: Magnet programs offer a range of thematic educational choices for grades EE-12. Each program’s enriched curriculum centers on a specialized theme that meets students’ diverse needs.
  • Great Schools.org: Find a school – check out what other parents have to say. This site helps parents find schools using achievement data and by reading other parent reviews. This sight is designed to help parents find a school that is right for them.
  • Center For Education Reform: drives the creation of better educational opportunities for all children by leading parents to clear school choice information.
  • School Matters: see school test data, compare, and contrast schools in any school zone. This site has very good statistical data and allows parents to compare schools in any zone.
  • Find a Charter School in Houston: The Texas Charter Schools Association (TCSA) is the statewide Association representing approximately 400 charter schools serving unique missions. Charter schools vary in mission and model, serving a wide range of students.
